This event is free of charge and a number of places are open to industry journalists and comms professionals. You must register to attend as places are limited.

Day 1: 9.45am – 4.30pm

Day 2: Either 9.30am – 12.30pm or 1.30pm until 4.30pm

This course is a joint enterprise with Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Masters programmes in Sports Broadcast Journalism and Specialist (print/online) journalism.

What the workshop will cover:

20 February – Day 1: The main legal issues common to print, online, broadcast and social media: libel, contempt, copyright, reporting restrictions, malicious falsehood and ethical issues.

21 February – Day 2: Split day (please opt for the appropriate ticket when you book)

Day 2: Morning and afternoon break-out sessions:

9.30-12.30:  issues relating specifically to those working predominantly in broadcast.

1.30-4.30: issues relating to those working mainly in print/online.

Both sessions will involve practical exercises and discussion relating to each medium. Social media will feature in both sessions.

Participants attend for the whole of day 1 and attend the session most appropriate to them on the following day. If you work predominantly in a broadcast (video/audio) environment you’ll choose the morning session on day 2; if you work predominantly in the written form then you’ll attend the afternoon session on day 2.

Who’s it for?

A ‘back to basics’ for journalists and Comms professionals who have taken a career break, who haven’t had a law refresher for a number of years or who have learned about media law on-the-job but haven’t had formal media law training.
