What’s it about?
Welcome to the mobile video workshop that helps journalists and communication professionals rise to the challenge of creating content from home.
This one-day programme is delivered online, but still aims to be as practical and interactive as possible. Participants will undertake a series of step-by-step tutorials, from recording selfie- style interviews to editing stories for social media. You will also learn how to add subtitles to your interviews, create promo videos and shoot additional video clips to create multi-layered stories.
The focus is on shooting and editing video from home. This workshop has been specially adapted from our popular How to Shoot and Edit Video with your Smartphone workshop, led by tutor Dan Mason.
A PDF ‘toolkit’ will be shared with links to relevant apps and equipment.
Who’s it for?
Journalists and content creators working with the public, private and voluntary sectors, community media, PR, charities and unions. No previous experience of video is necessary.
What will I learn?
• Record remote (or face-to-face) interviews, understanding shot framing, background, audio and lighting.
• Edit, export and share interviews.
• Add titles to your videos.
• Understand how to shoot and edit additional video material to bring your video to life.
• Find and add music to your video projects.
• Add subtitles and text to your videos.
• Introduction to combining video and titles to create video explainers (time permitting)
What equipment will I need?
To access the workshop: Laptop or desktop computer with reliable wifi connection. Free account with Zoom (zoom.com), with free Zoom application downloaded to your computer.
To shoot and edit: Fully-charged Smartphone , with charger and earbuds incorporating microphone. You will need to ensure a couple of free apps are installed, and will need a budget tripod. We’ll send details and recommendations before the workshop. Participants should also check they are running the latest Operating system software (To check, go to Settings > General > Software Update) and apps are updated. You will also need space on your device to record video (2GB as a minimum).
About the trainer
Dan Mason is a multimedia trainer specialising in online and mobile. A journalist for over 30 years, Dan was an award-winning editor before establishing his training and media consultancy in 2010. Since then he has worked in over 30 countries throughout the Middle East, Africa and Asia. He is based in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he leads a journalism Master’s programme. In the UK, Dan trains extensively with organisations including the National Union of Journalists, Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, Equity (actors’ union) and Musicians’ Union, as well as the CIPR (Chartered Institute for Public Relations) and government, corporate and PR clients.
