Women’s sport in the UK is on the rise, but the coverage of women’s sport on TV, Radio, in Print and online still lags way behind that of the men. Likewise, women are slowly being given opportunities in sports journalism, on air and in production but true equality and gender balance in the wider sports media and broadcast industry is a long way off. 2018 has seen new ground being broken by women on our TV screens, radio stations and in our newspapers. Yet many inequalities and controversies remain.
Why are only around 10 percent of sports journalists women?
Why do some people still resent women commentating on men’s sport?
How do we avoid pigeon-holing women into reporting only on women’s sport?
How have women broken down barriers to forge successful sports journalism careers?
How important is it for women to progress into editorial roles?
It was good to see female pundits at the World Cup, but why did they disappear when the tournament reached the latter stages?
Why is there still so little coverage of women’s sport?
This special event, jointly organised by NUJ Training Wales, Cardiff Metropolitan University and Chwarae Teg will bring together prominent academics, media commissioners, industry experts, freelance and employed journalists, students and trade unionists to discuss the role of women in sports journalism and learn from one another.

The day will include opportunities to learn from industry panels, keynote speakers and involve networking opportunities.
