Tutor – Dan Mason
As a creative freelance, you need a website that projects your skills, service or portfolio. Why? Because it makes you more visible online and it’s the first thing many potential clients or customers look for.
Before you wrestle with site builders and hosts, you need to know what content will create the right impression. You know your strengths – but how do you convert them into words and pictures that look good and get found online?
During a morning of training, we’ll keep the technical side of building a website to a minimum, using a free online tool to build your profile and build a simple site, step by step.
You can go live with your training site, or adapt the structure to any website platform, including WordPress or Wix.
Note: This workshop is a companion to the NUJ Training Wales Introduction to the WordPress workshop, a half-day beginners’ guide to building a site with the world’s most popular website platform.
A PDF toolkit of tips, tools and resources will be shared during the workshop.
Who’s it for?
Content creators, freelancers and comms professionals who want to establish their personal brand online. Previous experience of website building or code is not required.
What will I learn?
During three hours of training you will learn how to:
• Establish your niche and goals
• Identify your audience (and what they are searching for online)
• Set a brand style using colour, fonts, logo, keywords and tone of voice
• Find the right domain name
• Build the essential content ‘blocks’ into a one-page personal, service or portfolio website
• Source and select images
• Use keywords to optimise text for SEO
What equipment will I need?
A laptop or desktop computer with strong internet connection. It is not possible to complete this workshop using a smartphone or tablet.
The workshop will be delivered on Zoom and participants will be required to register in advance with a free website platform (details to be included with joining instructions). You may need to register with other online tools on the day, so easy access to your email may be necessary to confirm registration.
