This half-day workshop covers the nuts and bolts of WordPress, for those who are new to the platform (or tried it and got stuck along the way!)
While building a simple, free WordPress.com site you’ll learn about themes, customisation, navigation, widgets, featured images and how to build a page with Gutenberg blocks. The training covers options for uploading stories, images and multimedia content including video and audio.
There will also be an introduction to taking your free WordPress site to the next level, including hosting, premium themes, choosing a website builder and plugins for site speed, efficiency and SEO.
Note: This workshop is a companion to the NUJ Training Wales Create a personal website or portfolio workshop, which provides insights into the content you’ll need for creating a personal brand, service or portfolio site.
A PDF toolkit of tips, tools and resources will be shared during the workshop.
Who’s it for?
This is beginner-level workshop aimed at content creators, freelancers and comms professionals who want to get started with WordPress to produce a personal website, portfolio or blog. Previous experience of WordPress, website building or code is not required.
What will I learn?
During three hours of training you will learn how to:
• Find your way around the WordPress dashboard and settings
• Select and activate themes
• Adjust settings including URL structures and site identity
• Create a navigation menu with internal and external links
• Use the Gutenberg block editor
• Upload content to a WordPress post, with SEO in mind
• Add multimedia such as YouTube videos
• Optimise and upload images to the WordPress media library
• Take your site further with an introduction to upgrade or hosting options
• Install plug-ins and premium themes on a hosted WordPress site
What equipment will I need?
A laptop or desktop computer with strong internet connection. It is not possible to complete this workshop using a smartphone or tablet.
The workshop will be delivered on Zoom and participants will be required to register in advance for a free account at wordpress.com (details to be included with joining instructions).
