Community Journalism Conference: 16 January 2013

Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies in the Bute Building, Cathays Park. CF10 3NB

Cardiff University’s Community Journalism Conference will explore the latest thinking, research and hands on experience in the rapidly developing field of hyperlocal and community journalism and examine the potential for engaging and empowering communities using digital technologies and social networks in innovative, low cost and sustainable ways.

Community news practitioners are invited to apply to attend for a reduced fee of £40.

The normal cost per delegate is £95 with lunch and refreshments provided.

Who Should Attend?

The conference will be of interest to practitioners, decision makers, opinion formers, academics, and enablers, including:

• Those working in the media who have an interest in shaping the future of community and local journalism

• Academics, policy makers, community workers and activists

• Community and local journalists leading or planning enterprises

• Funding bodies and commercial social media companies

Conference speakers and session presenters will impart essential practical knowledge covering digital tools, law and ethics.

Delegates will have the opportunity to attend three of the following workshops, to be chosen in advance:

1. How to set up HyperLocal platforms, open source sites and using multi platforms

2. Using social media to gather news and build audience

3. Law, ethics and accreditation in a digital age

4. Research and evidence

5. Sustainability and business models

6. Engaging and Empowering Communities

7. Building a network in Wales

8. Key Factors in making local news hubs successful
