In an ever-evolving industry the need for journalists and media professionals to keep their skills up-to-date has never been greater. As well as courses in core journalism skills tailored for the media industry, we offer a wide range of related training for PRs, communications managers, media students, social media managers, content creators and more. Digital technology has changed the face of media work over recent decades, but more recently the advent of AI has introduced new threats and new opportunities, and we are already delivering AI training to help media workers recognise and face the challenge. Our popular courses are taught by industry professionals and skilled tutors with the ability to provide practical and topical insights into the developing media landscape.
Courses are open to all. We welcome non-union members as well as members of fellow unions, but it is NUJ members who benefit from the very lowest fees. Those living in Wales and facing redundancy may qualify for additional support, and NUJ members who have been made redundant within the previous 6 months are entitled to two free places on our courses.
If you cannot find training that you need in our calendar please contact us with your requests. We can also provide bespoke workplace training for you or your team – email us for more information.
NUJ Training in London also offers training for NUJ members. Take a look at their training page to see what they have to offer.
TERMS & CONDITIONS
NUJ Training Wales (NUJTW) runs a mix of online, hybrid and face-to-face training and events, funded by the Welsh Government’s WULF scheme and provided by our project through the National Union of Journalists. Those who take part in our training are known as Learners. As part of the funding we are required to demonstrate value for money, and meet targets set by the Welsh Government. Find out more here: https://www.tuc.org.uk/wulf
Online/ hybrid training
Online and hybrid workshops are hosted on Zoom, and are live and interactive. Wherever possible we ask that you use your camera and microphone to interact with each other as a group. Please see our Zoom policy below.
Face-to-face training/ events
Face-to-face training is organised and hosted by NUJTW, funded or subsidised by the Welsh Government through WULF, and delivered by external training providers and tutors. These are subject to the booking, refund, data, etiquette, complaints, cancellation and accessibility policies below, and require Learners to complete a Learner Form or provide equivalent data before attendance.
In-person training takes place in venues across Wales. Accessibility and cost are the key factors in deciding on venues. We aim to choose locations that are fully accessible and easily reached by public transport, but please advise us before your course if you have specific requirements.
We sometimes work in partnership with other organisations to provide industry-related conferences or events.
Payment and booking terms
- The Course will be delivered in person at the location specified on your booking, or using Zoom. Unless otherwise specified the course will be hosted by NUJTW and taught by an external tutor.
- Payment and booking are handled by the Eventbrite platform, and subject to their terms, conditions and fees. They do not share your payment data with us.
- Access to the course will only be permitted upon receipt by us of the data requested by us on the EventBrite platform and/or a separate Learner Form (this is a requirement of the project and our Welsh Government WULF funding). Please note that any data not supplied during the booking process will be requested separately, and failure to supply this data may result in you not being permitted to take part on the course.
- Learners will be granted access to any available course materials after the course.
- Courses are not routinely recorded.
- Cancellation of your booking is possible within certain timescales. Please see our refunds policy below.
- If you book the course and do not supply us with the required data regarding you, your booking, your accessibility needs and your training needs, we may be unable to count you towards our Welsh Government targets, and therefore unable to claim a subsidy for your place. You will not be given access to the course without the required data, either by you supplying it through the Eventbrite platform or through a completed Learner Form. Additionally if you do not attend the course, and do not give adequate notice of your non-attendance, we reserve the right to charge you for the market cost of your place, ie £200 plus £25 admin fee. In this instance your original course fee will not be refunded.
- Your ticket is for a live event. If you are unable to attend, no recording will be available. However, upon completion of the WULF Learner Form, you will be considered a Learner for the purposes of Welsh Government funding and data tracking, and any course handouts or other resources will be made available. However as these are live events and tutor delivery methods differ, these resources are not guaranteed.
- If you complete a Learner Form but do not attend the course without notifying us at least 48 hours before the start of the course, we are unable to refund your course payment. We will provide any course materials but recordings are not available. If you receive course materials, you will still be counted as a Learner for the purposes of Welsh Government, and your data will be used according to our data policy.
Online booking process
- Once you have purchased a ticket on Eventbrite, you will be emailed instructions on next steps. In the case of face-to-face training, you will be sent an email to confirm the location of your training and any pre-course instructions. If the course is online, you will be sent an email explaining how to receive a Zoom link, which may require you to complete a Learner Form. THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL BE SENT TO THE EMAIL ADDRESS PROVIDED ON YOUR BOOKING FORM. We kindly request that you complete the Learner Form as soon as possible as this is a manual process conducted by the NUJ Training Wales team and could result in a delay to you receiving access to the course.
- Upon completion of the Learner Form you will be sent the Zoom meeting ID and password. For security reasons this is usually sent the day before the course, but occasionally on the day of the course. If you are concerned that you have not received the link, please wait until 8.30am on the morning of the course to alert the team.
- Click on the link to the Zoom meeting up to 10 minutes before the live webinar is due to start. For security reasons we have disabled the ability to change your display name within Zoom, so please ensure your name is correct in Zoom before you log in, or ask the meeting Host to change it for you once you enter. It is helpful if your Zoom name matches the name you used to register for the course, to enable us to admit you promptly.
If you encounter any issues, please contact [email protected] / [email protected]
Zoom etiquette
Our Zoom policy is intended to encourage smooth conversations in Zoom and promote a positive learning environment for all.
- Mute your microphone when you aren’t speaking.
- Be mindful of, and aim to reduce, background noise and distractions around you.
- Adjust your camera and lighting so we can see your face. If you prefer not to use your camera, please add a profile photo to your Zoom account, so we can still see your face when you turn off your camera.
- Remember that you are always ‘on camera’. You are welcome to mute your audio and switch off your video if you need to.
- All comments and discussions should be respectful of the instructor and fellow students; disagreements are fine, but personal attacks are not.
- Don’t be a Zoom-hog. Be considerate in not talking over people, and give everyone a chance to speak.
- The tutor will give instructions on how best to ask questions or contribute to the discussion. For example by using the “Raise your hand” function or by putting a brief note in the chat window.
- The chat window should be used only for class-related discussions—comments, sharing of resources. Keep remarks on-topic and courteous.
- Abusive behaviour will not be tolerated, and we reserve the right to remove offenders from the meeting. Refunds will not be offered in this instance.
RECORDING AND ACCESSIBILITY
Workshops are NOT routinely recorded. If you require a recording for accessibility reasons, please contact us at least 48 hours before the course to let us know your requirements. We will do our best to accommodate you, although we cannot guarantee to provide recordings.
Please notify us of any accessibility requirements you have. For English-language courses we usually enable auto-captioning within Zoom. We are not responsible for errors made by Zoom’s auto-captioning software. On request we are able to activate auto-captioning for Welsh-language courses, but please note that Zoom’s Welsh language auto-captioning is not reliable. Transcripts of the auto-captioning are not routinely available.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Please be aware that Zoom auto-captioning makes use of AI. However, as outlined above, we do not record the courses, and so there is no record of online courses made, stored or retained by NUJ Training Wales.
We do not permit the use of AI to record, transcribe or otherwise infringe the data, privacy or copyright of our learners and tutors. This includes the use of AI notetakers. If you have accessibility concerns please contact a member of the team.
Refund Policy
If you are unable to attend a course you have booked, we require notification at least 7 days prior to face-to-face events, and 48 hours for online events, in order to obtain a full refund of your course fee. Please note refunds do not include the Eventbrite booking fees.
Inside these timescales, we may be able to move your place to an alternative course, subject to availability.
If you do not notify us within these timescales we are unable to refund your course fees, and you may become liable for other charges.
Cancellation policy
From time-to-time it may be necessary to cancel or postpone training courses or events. We will do our best to give as much notice as possible in the event of a cancellation, and will move course places to replacement or alternative courses wherever possible, or where this is not possible or preferred, we will refund course fees in full, including Eventbrite fees. We are not liable for loss of earnings, bookings, deposits, travel, tickets, or any other outlay outside of our own course fees as a result of cancellation.
Data Protection

By registering for any of our training courses, grants or events, you are accepting that your personal data will be held by us for legitimate use by the project to design and deliver appropriate training. The data is used only to show outcomes and outputs and is securely maintained as stipulated in the contracts for the funding.
In addition, and only where you have explicitly agreed, NUJTW uses this data to send you information about future NUJTW events and training courses, update you on news, resources and publications and contact you for any future research we may conduct into the industry. We will never use or share your data without your permission.
