Trainer – David Banks

It’s easy to fall foul of the law online. This one-day workshop is an essential introduction to media law, giving you the tools and confidence to post online without worrying about unintended (and sometimes expensive) consequence. The course is tailored to those who work in content creation, social media, marketing and comms, covering the following topics:

  • Libel, slander and malicious falsehood – what do they mean, what’s the difference between them, and how to avoid them
  • Privacy and confidentiality, and data protection – know the rules and avoid the pitfalls
  • Copyright – essential information about using other people’s work online, or what to do if someone uses your work without permission
  • Social media – and how online publishing differs from print and broadcast
  • Contempt of Court – making sure you don’t fall foul of the courts
  • Codes of ethics – traditionally used by journalists and broadcasters, and how they can apply to the online world

Alongside expert guidance from David Banks, you will work individually and in groups to tackle a series of scenarios featuring various aspects of law and ethics to put your new knowledge to the test.

At the end of each scenario there will be a group discussion to debrief and explore the legal issues in detail.

The aim of the workshop is to enable those attending to put the lessons learned into practice in ‘real life’ situations, enhancing their decision-making skills in a complex and fast-moving media environment.

Who is it for?

The workshop is suitable for all abilities, from those with no knowledge of media law, through to experienced journalists and comms professionals in need of a refresher. It will be tailored to those working in the digital/ social media/ comms sector, but will also give invaluable insights to those in journalism or broadcast roles.
