Trainer – Dan Mason
You’ve probably heard of Substack. It’s a tool for creating newsletters, right?
Correct, but it’s a lot more besides. Substack is a growing home for freelance journalists, news start-ups, organisations, charities, brands and content creators looking to carve a niche and cultivate community. Some are there to grow their profile, others are there to grow their profits. Both are welcome on Substack.
Surprisingly, Substack is in the top 25 most-visited news websites in the UK. That’s because it is a content ecosystem with its own app (and even its own X-like social media feed).
It’s also a robust podcast platform, with integrated live video channel, and showcase for long-form writing, displayed on a (simple) Substack website. That means podcasts, websites, writing space and newsletter publishing machine are all under one umbrella.
Substack has a few limitations. But … it is free. Substack only starts to make money when you make money (if that’s what you want to do).
In this one-hour Fast Skills Friday session with trainer Dan Mason, it’s hands on with Substack to run through the basics of setting up and launching a newsletter. So, if you have been thinking about starting a newsletter, Substack might just be the place to do it.
What will I learn?
- Starting from scratch. Why start a newsletter and how to prepare.
- What are the options? Substack features compared.
- How to set up a closed Substack for testing.
- Text, podcast … or both? Here’s how to do it.
- Tips for effective newsletter content
Who’s it for?
Anyone, from any sector, interested in launching a newsletter or finding out more about Substack. No previous experience necessary. Participants can dive in during the session or just follow along – there’s no pressure. Please note, in the one-hour session, there will be time for questions but little opportunity for individual support.
