Freelance finances can be unpredictable at the best of times, so how can we control them, particularly when things are uncertain?

This workshop is for freelance writers and journalists, whether new to the industry or with years of experience. We look at how you can set budgets in your personal life, as well as getting your finances under control in your professional life.

We will cover:

1) How to assess your current situation and set budgets

2) How to estimate your future finances to avoid running out of money

3) How to save as a freelancer – short term, media term, long term

4) How to keep records in a way that helps you

5) How to get paid on time and chase your money

You will receive plenty on downloadable resources including topic help sheets and working templates.

We will be joined by guest speaker Jo Downing from the Journalists Charity. Jo is the charity’s Grants Officer, and is an expert on welfare benefits, debt advice and other financial help that may be available to journalists.

About the trainer – David Thomas:

David has been running his training business for more than 15 years, helping creative freelancers all over the UK to be more organised and business-like.

He specialises in finance and networking skills training, and loves working with people who would rather hide under the duvet than open a spreadsheet or attend a ‘networking opportunity’. He also runs regular workshops to help people going through a redundancy process and moving from employment to self-employment for the first time.

David has a background in broadcasting, having worked at the BBC for 22 years. He helped set up two local radio stations before moving to the BBC World Service where he produced current affairs and educational output on radio, TV and online.
