Learn how to shoot and edit high quality video content on your iPhone – and then edit it on your iPad/Mac laptop.
The iPhone 4S is a revolution in video technology. It shoots in HD, delivering pictures that are often far better than those from cameras costing thousands of pounds. At the same time, it has its limitations and these need to be managed.
This course sets out some simple, easy to understand rules that will allow you to transform your iPhone from a “birthdays, weddings and holiday” camera into a powerful journalistic tool.
Content:
The day is made up of a series of practical exercises designed to get you shooting simple but effective sequences that will allow you to tell stories through video. We look at the different shots you need to make good edits. We cover how to shoot an interview. And we learn how to go about filming people when they doing things. Locations, interviews, action. If you can shoot these things well, you can tell stories through video. This course will show you how – using your own iPhone.
Who should attend:
Anybody with an interest in learning the basics of video-journalism using an iPhone.
Equipment:
You will need your own iPhone 4 or 4S (or iPod Touch), together with your iPad or MacBook with iMovie installed. (There may be small additional kit requirements). Will will supply basic tripods. Keep it in mind that you can get discounts on Apple products as an NUJ member (via the main NUJ website).
Participants will learn how to:
• Recognise and shoot the key shots needed to tell stories through video.
• Shoot professional looking video content on their iPhone, suitable for use on the web.
• Control focus, exposure and white balance on their iPhone.
• Shoot basic sequences to cover location, interviews and individual activity.
• Edit sequences together to form a short film, using iMovie.
NB: An iMovie app is available for iPhones and we will look at this at the end of the course as an option for emergencies/breaking news stories. However, for training purposes it’s preferable to use an iPad or MacBook. If you don’t have an iPad or a MacBook and would like to do the course using just an iPhone, please tell us when you book your place on the course.
If you have any queries regarding the course itself, please email Anna Wynn Roberts, the project manager on trainingwales@nuj.org.uk or phone 02920 331020 (operates 3 days a week).
