Content:

Freelancers endlessly need to pitch for work and to do deals. Whether you are a writer, photographer, reporter, sub-editor, broadcaster or whatever, you will benefit from knowing how to present your work and your ideas so as to make them most attractive to clients and from understanding what goes into making a deal and how you might improve on that first offer. This one-day course aims to help freelancers market their work and negotiate better deals for themselves.

Through role-play exercises and discussion, participants will work on the skills and attitudes needed to try to get more commissions and more money. This will include:

  • pitching ideas with deals in mind
  • identifying outlets
  • interacting with editors
  • thinking about fees
  • asking for more money
  • adding conditions
  • understanding the psychology of pitching and dealing
  • coming up with scripts for situations
  • role plays to put ideas into practice

Who should attend:

Freelance journalists who want to try to get more work and improve the deals they make; those who are considering going freelance; media workers who are looking for full-time work but need to work as a freelance in the short-term.

Qualifications:

A desire to improve your work-getting and deal-making skills.

Expected learning outcomes:

  • An understanding of what it takes to persuade commissioners to use your work
  • Acquisition of greater confidence in your deal-making skills

  • Don’t forget to include your NUJ (or other union) membership number to qualify for the £25 course fees.
  • Your place on the course won’t be confirmed until payment is received.
  • Please note that we have a cancellation policy of 3 working days (before start of course) after which time fees cannot be refunded. This is so that places can be filled and as many as people as possible get the opportunity to take up these courses.
